Why Use This Calculator?

Prop firm traders face unique challenges - here's how our calculator helps you succeed

01

Avoid Blown Challenges

The biggest mistake prop firm traders make is over-risking during drawdown recovery. Our calculator shows you the exact safe risk level to use, preventing you from hitting maximum drawdown limits while attempting to recover.

02

Realistic Expectations

Stop guessing how long recovery will take. Monte Carlo simulations show you realistic timeframes based on actual trading variance, not just simple averages. Understand that recovery might take 20+ trades even when the math says 14.

03

Strategic Planning

Make informed decisions about whether to continue a challenge or reset. See your risk of ruin percentage and compare aggressive vs conservative recovery strategies before committing capital.

04

Stay Within Rules

Never accidentally violate daily or maximum drawdown limits. Our calculator shows exactly how much drawdown buffer you have left and warns you if your risk settings are too aggressive for safe recovery.

How It Works

Four simple steps to create your drawdown recovery plan

1

Enter Challenge Details

Input your account size, current drawdown %, and your prop firm's daily and overall DD limits.

2

Set Your Target

Enter your profit target percentage (typically 8-10% for most prop firm challenges).

3

Input Trading Stats

Add your win rate, risk-reward ratio, and desired risk per trade percentage.

4

Get Recovery Plan

Receive safe risk levels, expected trade count, risk of ruin, and realistic Monte Carlo ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recovery gain percentage?

Recovery gain is the percentage you need to gain from your current equity to reach a specific target. For example, if you're down 10% ($10k to $9k), you need an 11.1% gain on your current $9k equity to get back to $10k. This is always higher than the drawdown percentage due to the smaller base.

How is risk of ruin calculated?

Risk of ruin estimates your probability of hitting the maximum drawdown limit before recovery. It considers your edge (win rate × R:R), risk per trade, and distance to the drawdown threshold. A 15% risk of ruin means there's a 15% chance you'll fail the challenge while attempting recovery.

Why do Monte Carlo results differ from average trades needed?

The average trade count assumes perfectly average results every trade. Monte Carlo simulations run 1,000+ random sequences matching your win rate, showing realistic variance. You might get lucky and recover in fewer trades, or hit a losing streak requiring more. The 60/40 split helps you plan for both scenarios.

Should I use aggressive or conservative risk during recovery?

Conservative risk (0.5-0.7%) is generally safer during drawdown recovery. While aggressive risk (1.4-2%) can speed recovery, it dramatically increases your risk of ruin. Our calculator shows both options so you can make an informed decision based on your risk tolerance and account situation.

Does this work for FTMO, The5ers, and other prop firms?

Yes! The calculator works with any prop firm. Simply input your specific daily and overall drawdown limits. Default settings match common firms like FTMO (5% daily, 10% overall), but you can customize for any firm's rules including The5ers, Funding Pips, MyForexFunds, etc.

What if I'm already at or near maximum drawdown?

The calculator will show a high risk of ruin and warn you that you're near limits. In this situation, you typically have two options: trade extremely conservatively (0.2-0.3% risk) with a low chance of recovery, or reset the challenge. The calculator helps you understand the realistic probability of each approach.
