How to Trade NFP: Non-Farm Payrolls Strategy and Risk Rules

The US jobs report, known as non-farm payrolls (NFP), is one of the most watched events on the forex calendar. The next release is on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 8:30 AM Eastern Time, which is 13:30 UTC and 7:15 PM in Nepal. This guide explains what NFP is, why it moves currencies, three ways traders approach it, and the risk rules that matter most.
What Is Non-Farm Payrolls?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes the Employment Situation report once a month. It includes the change in non-farm payrolls (the number of jobs added outside farming), the unemployment rate, average hourly earnings, and revisions to the previous two months, according to Thrive in Markets. Traders usually call it the NFP or the jobs report.
The Latest Report and What Comes Next
The September report, released on October 2, showed payrolls up 29,000, an unemployment rate of 4.2%, and average hourly earnings up 0.1% on the month and 3.0% over 12 months, according to SimianX. The October report on November 6 is followed by US CPI inflation on November 10, and the Fed’s next meeting is on December 9, as listed by Finance Calendar. That is why this report matters for rate expectations.
Why NFP Moves the Forex Market
The jobs report shows how strong the US labour market is, and that affects what the Federal Reserve may do with interest rates. Interest rate expectations drive the US dollar. Our guide on how central bank rate decisions move forex explains the chain in more detail.
Markets react to the gap between the forecast and the actual number, not to the number alone:
- Better than forecast: can raise expectations of tighter Fed policy and often lifts the dollar.
- Worse than forecast: can lower those expectations and often weakens the dollar.
- In line with forecast: the reaction is usually smaller, and traders may focus on other details.
You can see Actual, Forecast and Previous values on our economic calendar. Do not read only the headline. Check the unemployment rate, wage growth and revisions too, because the first move often reverses when traders see the full picture.
Three Ways Traders Approach NFP
These are common approaches for education, not recommendations.
| Approach | How it works | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Stay flat | Do not trade the release and study the reaction | You may miss a big move |
| Trade the aftermath | Wait 15 to 30 minutes, then look for a pullback or a clear break after the spike settles | The move may already be over, or the trend may fail |
| Trade the spike | Open a trade just before or at the release | Wide spreads, slippage and fast reversals can hit stops far from your price |
Most beginners are better off watching NFP and recording what happens before they risk money on it. A trading journal helps you learn from each release.
Position Size Example for NFP
Suppose you have a $1,000 account and risk 1% per trade, which is $10. On a normal day you might use a 20 pip stop on EUR/USD. For a standard lot, one pip is worth about $10 on a USD account, so $10 divided by 20 pips means you can afford about $0.50 per pip, or 0.05 lots.
Around NFP, price can swing far beyond a normal range, so a 40 pip stop is more realistic. The same $10 risk then allows about $0.25 per pip, so you would use roughly 0.02 lots. A wider stop means a smaller position. Use the risk management calculator and read our lot size guide to work out your own numbers.
NFP Checklist
- Check the release date and time on the calendar a day before, because dates can shift. In July, for example, the report came out on a Thursday because of a holiday.
- Note the forecast and previous values for payrolls, unemployment and wages.
- Reduce position size or stay flat if you cannot accept a sudden spike against you.
- Expect wider spreads. Read our guide to forex spreads to see why costs rise.
- Keep leverage low. Our guide to leverage and margin shows how fast losses can grow.
- Do not move your stop-loss further away after you enter.
- Write down what happened, whether you traded or not.
Which Markets Move Most on NFP
US dollar pairs such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY usually react first, along with gold. Gold is especially sensitive to the dollar and to rate expectations, as we explain in our gold price forecast. Pairs without the dollar can also move because of changes in the dollar’s strength.
NFP Time in Nepal
The report is due at 8:30 AM Eastern Time. US clocks go back on November 1, so on November 6 that is 13:30 UTC, or 7:15 PM in Nepal. Before November 1 the same release time would be 6:15 PM in Nepal. Use the forex market hours clock to see which sessions are open, and read our forex trading sessions guide to understand liquidity around the release.
Common NFP Mistakes
- Entering a trade one minute before the release without a plan.
- Using full leverage on a news event.
- Chasing the first candle after the release.
- Forgetting that spreads and slippage can be far worse than usual.
- Ignoring the unemployment rate, wages and revisions.
